Ever considered a career in Science, Engineering, or perhaps general technology? The Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) is a private University founded in 1958 that specializes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Shane Lowney is one of the many students to have completed FIT’s Engineering program. The University is located in what is known as The Space Coast of the Atlantic Ocean – Melbourne, Florida.
Dr. Jerome Keuper originally founded the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) as Brevard Engineering College. In 1966 the college expanded its campus and curriculum and officially became FIT. Today the impressive institution spans over 130 acres with 6 residence halls, 3 apartment style accommodations, 5 dining halls, and multiple student services. FIT also offers several off campus learning sites across the US.
In addition to FIT’s extensive variety of degrees in the disciplines of Science and Engineering, it is also one of the few colleges to offer an aviation program. There are also currently 132 active student organizations including many fraternity and sororities, a homecoming committee, and a Student Government Association.
With an impressive 9,112 students enrolled in the Fall of 2013 the highest percentage was in FIT’s College of Engineering at over more than 50%. Among those enrolled, the population was predominately male with a ratio of 73:27. The diverse bunch hailed from 47 of the US states and 101 other countries.
Other than Shane Lowney, some notable graduates of the Florida Institute of Technology are actor Jim Quinn, former Delaware mayor Stephen Speed, and baseball player Tim Wakefield.
