Shane Lowney: Balancing Work and Home Life

Shane Lowney is an experienced Mechanical Engineer with more than a decade of experience in his field. His work life is busy and he often works overtime to better complete his projects. When he isn’t at work, Shane Lowney is spending time with his wife Christine or flying his Cessna 182. Maintaining this type of work and home life balance isn’t easy, and it quickly becomes overwhelming to most people. If you’re struggling to balance your work and home life, the following steps might help you feel more at ease:

  • Identify what matters to you. Spend at least an hour writing about what matters to you with both your professional goals and your home life. This might mean leaving work by 4:30 every day to have dinner with your family or taking an hour lunch break to take a jog. Whatever you come up with, make a list for important professional goals and for important personal goals.
  • Record your usual schedule. For one week, keep an hourly log of everything you do without changing anything. Whether you’re showering, browsing Facebook or working on a project, write down what you’re doing with every hour of your day for seven days.
  • After you’ve written a list of what you need and you’ve kept a log of what you do, compare the two. Do you make time for the things that are important to you? Do you spend unnecessary hours doing things that didn’t make the list, like social media browsing?
  • Make a schedule. Using the same hourly format, make a schedule that allows you to do what you want to do and eliminates time wasters. Update this schedule weekly for a month until you find balance.

Shane Lowney works hard to balance his work life with his home life. He makes time to have dinner with his wife, for them to go rock climbing together and for them to travel together. He also makes time to manage his engineering projects and to fly his Cessna 182. To maintain this sort of balance, Lowney is constantly reworking his schedule to meet his current needs.
